Death of Novice Thomas Reddy
Novice Thomas Reddy Penta Reddy, died on January 14, 2007, at 11:00pm. He was born on June 13, 1984 in Thalacheruvu, a rural village in Guntur District, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. His father, Show Reddy, and mother, Chinnamma, own a plot of land where they grow chilies. His older brother, Chinnapa, is 25 years old.
Thomas became an SCJ candidate in 2001, and joined the minor seminary in Guntur, when Fr. Thomas Fix, SCJ was rector. After completing philosophy studies in Aluva, Kerala, at Dehon Vidya Sadhan, Thomas entered the Novitiate on April 30, 2006, in Nambur, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh.
During the month of November, 2006, Thomas began having pains in his chest and couldn’t eat anything. The doctors determined that there was something seriously wrong and sent him to a specialist in Hyderabad, the state capital. After tests, it was learned that Thomas was suffering from cancer, and that there was nothing that the doctors could do. After spending some time with the Novitiate community, Thomas returned to his home in Thalacheruvu, where SCJs visited him often. Thomas died among family and friends. Earlier on the same day, SCJs, family and friends celebrated the Eucharist with Thomas for the last time.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, January 15, 2007, at 3:00pm in Thalacheruvu. The SCJ communities of Guntur, Nambur, and Eluru were present, with many of Thomas Reddy’s family and friends. Burial took place at the parish cemetery in Thalacheruvu.
