The ceremony took place at St. Joseph's chapel where parishioners and SCJs gathered together to celebrate this event. Fr. Attilio Zorzetti, SCJ, Provincial of the Argentine Province, received the vows in the name of the Congregation.

For several months, the four SCJ regents have been in Argentina (Jojappa Ch. and Martin) and Brazil (Jojappa K and Christy Peter) learning the language, as they prepare themselves to be involved in SCJ ministry. Their regency program has been directed by Fr. Eduardo Aguero, SCJ (Argentina) and Fr. Sebastian Pitz, SCJ (Brazil)

Feast of the Sacred Heart

Fr. Ornelas was the main celebrant for the Feast of the Sacred Heart celebration at Christu Dehon Nivas. Over 130 religious, priests, and friends joined the SCJ community.

During the Mass, six SCJ theologians received the ministry of Lector, and five received the ministry of Acolyte.

Fr. Placido Rebelo, SCJ was installed as the new rector of Christu Dehon Nivas.

After Mass, everyone gathered in the dining room for a meal, and entertainment.

Fr. General Visits India

The flight of Fr. Ornelas Carvalho, Superior General of the Priests of the Sacred Heart, and Fr. Paul Sugino, General Councilor, who oversees the Asia Zone of the Congregation, arrived at the Cochin, Kerala, airport at 9:00am. Fr. Kusmaryadi, SCJ India District Superior, and Fr. Aji greeted them upon their arrival at the airport.

They received a warm welcome at Dehon Vidya Sadhan, SCJ philosophy community, according to the traditions of India, with the gift of a garland of flowers, Arathi, an Indian blessing, and the breaking of a coconut, for luck. The brothers sang a melodious welcome song.

Fr. General celebrated Mass for the welcoming SCJs at Dehon Vidya Sadhan. Then, at 3:00pm, even after the long journey of Fr. General and Fr. Sugino, they went to the Sacred Heart philosophy college to participate in the Mass of Inauguration, which opened the new academic year. There were nearly 20 priests from different communities who came for the Mass. A small reception took place afterwards.

Fr. General and Fr. Sugino are conducting a formal Visitation of the SCJ India District, which he is required to do according to the SCJ Constitutions. After the next day’s scheduled India District Council meeting, the two guests from Rome will proceed to visit every SCJ community, to meet with individual SCJs, District Commissions, and students.

Final Vow Celebration

On May 23, 2010, the SCJ India District celebrated the profession of Final Vows of Brother Sajeevan Marcelin, SCJ. The ceremony took place at Dehon Bhavan, Kumbalanghy, Kerala, at 10am. The Final Vows were received by Fr. Kusmaryadi, SCJ, India District Superior.

Br. Sajeevan was born in Puluvila-Trivandrum on January 7, 1980. He began as a candidate at Dehon Bhavan seminary, in Kumbalanghy. After studying for his BA at St. Antony’s College, Aluva, he entered the novitiate and took First Vows on May 7, 2003. After his regency experience in North India for one year, Br. Sajeevan joined the theology program in Janampeta, Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. Then, for 3 years he studied Electrical Engineering at the Institute of Technology at Kalamassery, Kerala.

Br. Sajeevan is now assigned to the SCJ Philippine District, where he is studying for a degree at the Institute of Consecrated Life, in Manila.

Acceptance of Postulants and First Profession

On April 30, 2010, the SCJ India District held a welcoming ceremony for ten candidates who joined the postulancy program at Sacred Heart Ashram in Nambur, Andhra Pradesh. This marks a new beginning for the India District postulancy program, which will now be for one year. The program will provide the postulants many opportunities for learning about themselves, within and outside the classroom, as they prepare for entrance to the novitiate.

At 7am on May 1st, the following four novices made their First Profession of Vows:

Raju Dumala: 22 years old, from St. Joseph’s Parish, Kanaparru, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. He became an SCJ candidate in 2003 when he entered Dehon Prema Nilayam seminary in Gorantla, Andhra Pradesh.

Ravi Kumar Dasari: 23 years old, from Eamoni Parish, Vallabhapuram, Andhra Pradesh. He became an SCJ candidate in 2005 when he joined the Senior Aspirant program in Aluva, in the state of Kerala.

Terrance T.J.: 22 years old, from St. Peter’s Parish, Kumbalanghy, Kerala. He became an SCJ candidate in 2003 when he entered Dehon Bhavan seminary, in South Kumbalanghy, Kerala.

Wenceslaus Pinto: 38 years old, from Holy Cross Parish, Cavelossim, in the state of Goa. He became an SCJ candidate in 2005 when he joined the Senior Aspirant program in Aluva, Kerala.

Regent in South Africa

Dear confreres, Vivat cor Jesu

It is very cool here, now it is -5 degrees. I hope I will survive this winter. Jayaraj is coming to enjoy the real chill of the winter. This time I would like to share with you about my community. I am in the Diocese of DeAar. This is a small diocese with nearly 5000 catholics , but I wonder how many are practicing. This first bishop of this diocese was our former general superior, Bp. DePalma from the US province. The present Bishop is also an SCJ, from the United States, Bishop Joseph Potocnak. He submitted his resignation to the Pope recently because he is 75 now. Six priests and 3 sisters are working in this diocese. Once there were more than 20 priests and 70 sisters. But now this is the situation. Among the six priests there are 4 SCJs. Most of us are living alone, so our community is a territorial community. We come together sometimes for discussions and lunch. The distance, and the price of the petrol, is a hindrance for regular meetings.

As I informed you earlier I am in Middelburg. Fr. John Strittmatter SCJ is the Parish priest. The Middelburg community consists of Fr. John, Sr. Cathy and Br. Tsekalalo.

Fr. John: The first day of my arrival here Fr. John told me, "Michael we work on Sundays, and all the six days we take rest." Within a week, I understood that was another joke by Fr. John. He works 24X7. From 8am in the morning, there is a big queue in front of our house, for financial help, for bread, for work, for making photo copies, for washing powder, … for various needs. I will share about the Father's projects another time. He trusts everyone. Sometimes he knows people are cheating him, but he says that if they are cheating me God will ask them. Father John has been a victim of attacks in our own house on two different occasions, before I came. At those times, strangers just released from prison posed as though they were seeking help and tried to rob him at knife point. Both times he escaped luckily. Now at least twice a month I go with Father to visit one of those prisoners in prison. I am sometimes amazed at his ability to forgive, and his patience. He is in South Africa for last 45 years, and in Middelburg for the last 20 years. I am happy to be here with Fr. John, a saint in "his own way", who trusts much in Divine providence, a very intellectual, humorous person. I have learned so much from him.

Sr. Cathy is the member of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. She is 67 years old. She is a professional nurse, with Indian origin. After retiring from the hospital she came to Middleburg and started the Hospice for Aids Patients. Now after 15 years, she has founded or helped to start nearly 16 hospices in nearby towns, which take care of more than 2000 patients. I help her sometimes for typing letters and reports. She is living in a separate house next to ours. She cooks sometimes for us, and I am especially happy because she cooks curries, and also sometimes chappati.

Br. Ntsikelelo, SCJ is the new addition to our community. He completed his theological studies in the institute last December, and is preparing for Final Profession. He will be with us for a few months. He is helpful for me, especially in working with the youth, mainly because of the language.

We have six more members in our community, our security guards, 3 big dogs, and 3 puppies. Now I am taking care of them. Our house is like a prison, with cement fences, capped with barbed wire surrounding the compound. Here, the crime rate continues to climb. People steal whatever they can get. Just yesterday, they stole the bulb from our front porch. I will share with you another time about the life of the people here. I would like to send some pictures to you, but the computer which I am using is very old, and it is very slow, so uploading photos would cost so much time and money, and I don’t want Father to spend so much money for the internet. But when I go to provincialate, I will try to share with you the pictures of the life of the people here.

DEHON JYOTHI COMMUNITY

During this new academic year of 2008-2009, the SCJ India District started a new community for the Senior Aspirant formation. Actually, this program is not new. It has been present since the beginning of the SCJ presence in India, 1996. But during the recent two years, the program ran together with minor seminary at Dehon Bhavan. This year, after discernment and consideration, it was decided that the Dehon Espirants progam should be by itself.

We rented a house, close to the Dehon Vidya Sadhan community, about 3 kilometers away.

The name of our house is Dehon Jyothi, which means, "the light of Dehon,"
This rented house is in a very convenient area,
because it is close to the market, hospital, and main road,
and for sure, we can easily get any kind of transportation: auto-rickshaw, tax, and bus.

This is the front side of Dehon Jyothi. There are two bedrooms for formators, and three bedrooms for our aspirants, the chapel, dining room, kitchen, a classroom, library, and five bathrooms. On top, there is the possibility of using space for other activities.

These are the community members of Dehon Jyothi. We are two SCJs, and 14 aspirants from 4 states: 6 from Andhra Pradesh, 4 from Tamil Nadu, 4 from Kerala, and 1 from Karnataka.

In this house, we build a vision as follows:

The Dehon Jyothi community is a formation community of candidates for religious and priestly life. During the year long program, the candidates discern their vocation, and deepen their baptismal commitment. They learn more about what it is to be authentically human, Christian, and Dehonian, striving to be open, in readiness, and sharing in a spirit of hospitality.

Daily, we meet to discuss topics of interest,
as well as the international and Indian news that we watch.

By that activity we try to fulfill our mission, to grow intellectually, spiritually, and culturally. This first year, importance and urgency is given to the study of the English language, which is the SCJ community language in India.

Our chapel is the place where we deepen as spirit as followers of Fr. Dehon:
"our whole vocation, our purpose, our duty, our promises,
are found in these words: 'Ecce Venio' and 'Ecce Ancilla.'"

Sports is one of our human formation programs.

It supports the candidate in his efforts to grow into a fully mature human being. The candidate should be guided to practice what will contribute to his good health. And it should be part of the daily routine of every candidate.

First Mass, Eluru

Newly ordained Frs. Jose, Sanil, and Sunil recently visited the Eluru community to celebrate a First Mass for the community and friends in the area. It was a very joyous occasion, with many friends in attendance. After the Mass, everyone continued the celebration in the dining hall for a festive meal.

The other two newly ordained, Frs. Jiju and Aji, were not able to participate at this time, because of they are in the Philippines, attending an international SCJ Pastoral Conference.

Installation of Minor Ministries

During Mass, in the evening of June 26th, twenty-one SCJ students of theology received ministries of minor orders, Lector and Acolyte.

Thirteen students were installed as lectors,

during which each received a copy of the Holy Scriptures; above is Br. Roy, with Fr. Martin, India District Superior

and eight were installed as acolytes,

Interior Decoration

These last weeks, since Fr. Kristianto (Indonesia) joined the SCJ community in Eluru, there has been a lot of interior decoration going on. Fr. Kris has been working on improving the atmosphere of the main chapel; he also began work on a small prayer room.

Fr. Kris works out of the garage, with few tools.

The additions to the main chapel includes the wood paneling and statues,

and the tabernacle.

It won't be long before the prayer chapel is ready for use!

Ordinations to Priesthood

On June 9, 2008, the SCJ India District celebrated the Ordinations to Priesthood of 5 Indian SCJs. Archbishop Sudarso, SCJ of the archdiocese of Palembang, Indonesia, performed the ordinations.

The ordinations took place in the village of Pulluvia, in the state of Kerala. Many SCJs, clergy, religious and friends filled the church for this happy occasion.

The newly ordained priests will visit all of the SCJ communities in India to celebrate First Mass with the members of the India District. Afterwards they will proceed to their assignments. Fr. Sunil will continue his education in Ireland; Fr. Jose will join the novitiate community in Nambur, Andhra Pradesh; Fr. Jijo will join the minor seminary community in Kumbalanghy, Kerala; and Frs. Sanil and Aji will continue their ministry in Vasai, Maharashtra.

The members of the SCJ India District very thankful and happy that Archbishop Sudarso was able to come to India for the ordinations. The procession in Kerala style, and the decorations, and the crowded presence of the people, were signs and expressions of happiness for the blessing of the new priests. More than 2.000 people shared the meal after the Celebration of the Eucharist. Archbishop Sudarso enjoyed this really Indian atmosphere.

Besides visiting the SCJ communities in Kerala, in Kumbalanghy (minor seminary) and Aluva (philosophy), the archbishop also took the time for a short visit to the SCJ communities in Andhra Pradesh, where our confreres are working in Nambur (novitiate), Gorantla (minor seminary) and Eluru (theologate.) Archbishop Sudarso was very impressed with the SCJ atmosphere and spirit, which he found in every community, the openness and hospitality, the smiling faces, and spontaneity.

SCJ India District Retreat

On April 17th, Fr. Peter Sanders, scj, from the SCJ region of Canada, arrived in Bangalore, India. For the next few weeks he directed the yearly community retreats for the SCJ India District.

Fr. Martin, India District Superior, is the main celebrant for the Eucharist, during which 3 Indian SCJs renewed their Vows.

Fr. General's Visit to India

Fr. Ornelas Carvalho, the Superior General of the Congregation, arrived in India from Rome on December 27^th, and was welcomed by the SCJ community in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh.

During his visit to the SCJ communities in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, Fr. General participated in the District Christmas celebration, and took part in the District Assembly (December 28-31.) Fr. General gave 2 major presentations at the Assembly: 1) Biblical Reflections on SCJ Spirituality, and 2) Perspectives on the Present Situation of the District and the Congregation, where he also proposed guidelines for the future.

Before leaving India, he met with the District Council in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. As a guest of the Salesian community that runs a ministry project for street children, he and the council were given a tour of the children shelters in the city.

Diaconate Ordinations

On December 10, 2007, six India SCJs were ordained deacons. Above, (left to right), are Deacons Sanil (front), Jose, Aji, Sunil, Michael, and Jijo (see post of September 8, 2007). The ordinations took place at St. George church, in South Kumbalanghy, Kerala, by Bishop John Thattumkal.

The deacons will now proceed to begin their diaconate ministry program: Michael will go to South Africa, Sunil will go to Scotland, Jose and Jijo will work in parishes in Kerala, Sanil and Aji will work in the Vasai Diocese, near Mumbai.

SCJ Communications Conference in Spain

Many SCJs representing provinces, regions and districts from around the world met in Madrid, Spain from November 23rd to the 27th.. The topic that was discussed was Communications: “A Reflection on Social and Christian Communication today.”

On the November 23 & 24, there were lectures on social thinking presented by professionals (including SCJs). This part of the conference was open to the public, taking place in the ESIC School of Business and Management, an important SCJ ministry.

During the meetings of November 26 & 27, which were held exclusively for SCJs., presentations and group work focused on issues that pertained to publications and magazines, communications with benefactors, websites and the internet, radio and television.

The participants, after discussions that dealt with present issues and future hopes, agreed on the following resolutions.

a) that the results of the conference be included in the proceeds of the SCJ General Chapter.
b) that there be a “director of communications” responsible for all aspects of SCJ communication, internal and external.
c) that a decision be made for an SCJ “logo” for the Congregation; this in connection with the suggestion to open the SCJ webpage to a wider audience, dealing with world events and issues from a Dehonian perspective.
d) that SCJs be trained in modern communications, on the general level and local levels, and that professionals in communication be hired to serve the Congregation.

These resolutions were presented to Fr. Ornelas, the superior general of the Congregation.

Sacred Heart School of Theology's Gift to India

A few months ago, with the help of Fr. Paul Reid (SCJ Missions Secretary, USA), Sacred Heart School of Theology, in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, sent a load of boxes to the new SCJ residence for theology students, Christu Dehon Nivas, in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, India.

The shipment included many books of theology, and clothing; for which the SCJs in India are very greatful!!!

Immersion Experience

The 2nd year philosophy students, with Fr. Szymon SCJ (Poland), came from our community in Aluva, Kerala, to Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, to spend time working with and learning about street children. Welcomed by the Salesians, who run the 6 programs in the city, the students were given the opportunity to meet the children who live on the streets, first hand. For 8 days (October 6-13) they went to railway stations, and bus stations, seeking to bring children to the centers. They organized activities for them, and talked with them, listening to their very sad stories.

“In the beginning there was a negative and unapproachable mentality of the children. In the beginning of our ministry we were not welcomed by them. But with our own effort and with the help of God, we tried to get into their hearts, and we successfully won their trust and belief.”

“Only God knows how terrible and marginalized their lives are. We went for visiting them to drink from the vessel of their sorrowful lives to console them. It is sad to call to mind their lives, that they work every day like animals and are treated as animals. They even do not get sufficient food or money. There is injustice – behind the bitter experience of their lives from the part of the high classes.”

“This is a challenge for our future ministry, to work for social justice, for these street children.”

“Our idea about street children has been totally different that what we have experienced. We thought they are indecent. When we have approached them, they have approached us in a decent way. We have felt that they are good and human like us when we spent this week among them, sharing their joys and sorrows.”

Onam Celebration in Eluru

The Onam feast is celebrated thoughout of Kerala, by Hindu, Muslim, and Christians. Much preparation is involved, especially involving food. The Eluru community, in Andhra Pradesh, also celebrated Onam, sponsored by Malayalee (Malayalam speakers from Kerala) community members.

"Onam has been part of Malayalee psyche for centuries. There are records of Onam being celebrated during the Sangam Age. The earliest record of Onam is found during the time of Kulasekhara Perumals around AD 800, soon after the Kalabhra Interregnum of Kerala History.[citation needed]

Onam has two specific significances. First it is the communal memory and celebration of past history as enunciated in the Mahabali legend – a story of how paradise was lost. Second it is the celebration of the harvest, tied with the memory of the golden age of prosperity. It is believed that during those days the whole of Chingam was celebrated as Onam season. After the rain-drenched month of Karkidakam, with its privations, Chingam is a welcome month for people in the state of Kerala. The festival is the harbinger of spring — signalling the start of the harvest season. Onam epitomises the newfound vigour and enthusiasm of the season, and is celebrated with traditional fervour with visits to temples, family get-togethers, gifting of clothes called Onakkodi and lots of merrymaking. The Keralites perform the Mohiniattam Dance, dedicated to the female form of Vishnu Mohini. There is also the Krishnanaattam dance. Many Keralites also worship Narayani. Sri Narayani Peedam and Sri Bangaru Adigalar of Kerala and their followers claim that these two figures are a forms or avatars of the goddess Sri Narayani."

Priestly Ordination of Deacon Thomas Vinod Chittilappilly

25th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood

Fr. Sebastian Pitz, SCJ celebrated his 25th anniversary of ordination to priesthood at Sacred Heart Novitiate, Nambur, Andhra Pradesh, on Saturday, February 17, 2007.

The following is some of Fr. Sebastian’s history as an SCJ priest:

I was ordained on December 19, 1981 in S. Pedro de Alcantar, SC, Brazil.
After ordination I spent 4 years at Araruna parish, Parana, in South Brazil, and directed the youth program of the Campo Maroa Diocese.

In 1986, I was formator in a seminary for adult vocations.

Leaving Brazil in 1986 to study in Rome, I received a doctorate in Spiritual Theology in March, 1991.

In 1995, I was named novice master for one year.

After studies in Rome and the USA, I came to India in April, 1998, and I was appointed novice master at Ponnarimangalam, Cochin, Kerala. After 2 years, I moved to the new SCJ novitiate in Nambur, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.

My mission in India will end at the beginning of May, 2007, and I will start a new work in Brazil with our theologians, in Taubate, S. Paulo.

I am very grateful to our Congregation for the opportunities given to me during these 25 years of priestly life. I am aware of my limitations and weaknesses, so I thank the Heart of Jesus for his constant presence and support in all that I could do for our Congregation and for the Kingdom of God.

Village Ministry

Bishop John Mulagada of the Eluru Diocese recently offered the SCJ community in Eluru a village in which to begin ministry. The village is not very far away from the theologate residence. Working with the 200 Catholic families will provide valuable experience for the students who are studying theology.

Death of Novice Thomas Reddy

Novice Thomas Reddy Penta Reddy, died on January 14, 2007, at 11:00pm. He was born on June 13, 1984 in Thalacheruvu, a rural village in Guntur District, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. His father, Show Reddy, and mother, Chinnamma, own a plot of land where they grow chilies. His older brother, Chinnapa, is 25 years old.

Thomas became an SCJ candidate in 2001, and joined the minor seminary in Guntur, when Fr. Thomas Fix, SCJ was rector. After completing philosophy studies in Aluva, Kerala, at Dehon Vidya Sadhan, Thomas entered the Novitiate on April 30, 2006, in Nambur, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh.

During the month of November, 2006, Thomas began having pains in his chest and couldn’t eat anything. The doctors determined that there was something seriously wrong and sent him to a specialist in Hyderabad, the state capital. After tests, it was learned that Thomas was suffering from cancer, and that there was nothing that the doctors could do. After spending some time with the Novitiate community, Thomas returned to his home in Thalacheruvu, where SCJs visited him often. Thomas died among family and friends. Earlier on the same day, SCJs, family and friends celebrated the Eucharist with Thomas for the last time.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, January 15, 2007, at 3:00pm in Thalacheruvu. The SCJ communities of Guntur, Nambur, and Eluru were present, with many of Thomas Reddy’s family and friends. Burial took place at the parish cemetery in Thalacheruvu.

India District Assembly

43 professed members of the India District came together from December 27th to January 1st for their annual Assembly. The purpose of the discussions this year was to set some priorities for the coming years regarding future ministries. The following is a summary of what was agreed upon:

The members of the District Assembly Agreed on the following by consensus:

The priorities for the next 3 to 5 years are:
1. Formation for Mission: languages, regency in the North, vocation promotion, categorical ministries, preparation for formators. (to be taken up by the District Formation Commission.)
2. Parish Apostolate (In Eluru, there should be a parish where SCJ students can experience parish ministry.)
3. Mission to the North: To form an Apostolic Commission (3 or 4 people) to research ministry possibilities.
*Possibility of Mumbai / Bombay. Many possibilities. The distance from Andhra Pradesh to Bombay is not so large.
*Need to contact the Bishop / assess the needs we work with / relationship with other religious working there. We can see all the different cultures, customs, languages of India in Bombay. In the slums there are all possible ministries.
*Timeframe: 2010 we would be ready to go.
*2011 – two communities?
4. Finances for Ministry: Create an Apostolic Fund Raising Committee (different than the District Finance Commission) To do research, learn…
*create projects to be realized in 5 to 10 years

Diaconate Ordination

On Saturday, December 6, 2006, Fra Thomas Vinod Chittilappilly, SCJ was ordained a Deacon, by Bishop Gali Bali of the Guntur Diocese. The celebration took place at Dehon Prema Nilayam, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, at 5:00pm.

Fra. Thomas was born in Kochi on December 27th, 1979. He is the eldest of three sons of Mr. Augustin and Victoria. He did his schooling in Fort Cochin and in Kannamaly. He joined the SCJs after his SSLC as a candidate in the year 1995 as one of the first eight students. He completed his minor seminary studies in Fort Cochin, Chandiroor and in Kumbalanghy. His study of philosophy was done at Sacred Heart philosophy college in Aluva. He made his First Profession of Vows on May 7th, 2003. His regency period was spent in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. He did his first year of Theology at St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminary in Aluva, Kerala, and completed his studies at Vijnana Nilayam School of Theology, in Janampet, Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. Fra. Thomas took is Final Profession of Vows on August 15, 2006. For his Diaconate program, Deacon Thomas will work in a parish in Thankey, Cochin Diocese, Kerala.

Secunderabad Immersion Experience

On Friday, October 6, in the early afternoon, eight SCJ candidates studying philosophy at Dehon Vidyam Sadhan, in Aluva, Kerala, arrived at the Secunderabad railway station . Until October 13th, they worked at a nearby street children center, Don Bosco Navajeevan Bala Bhavan, run by Salesian Priests and Brothers.

They are: Alex, Devaraj, Martin, Ravindra, Praveen, Simon, Suresh, Kishore

They welcomed the children straight off the streets, responding to their medical and clothing needs, doing their best to help the children feel at home. In the midst of a very busy schedule that began early in the morning with prayer and Eucharist, until lights out at night, they learned how to respond to the needs of the street children.
The SCJ students were given photo IDs for daily trips to railway stations, parks, and bus stations to find and talk with street kids, to invite them to the center. At the center itself they counseled the children individually, directed organized activities, and helped serve meals..

Every evening they met together in the chapel to reflect on the experiences of the day, sharing what was learned, evaluating their own attitudes and behavior in the midst of this new reality. They kept a daily journal of their own experiences and feelings, some of which they shared when they met together.

They were challenged by the lives of the children that they met and asked important questions about why these kids live on the streets, and how they can be helped.

“When we went to the railway stations we felt very difficult to talk with street children because they did not want to sit with us because they thought we are police. But there are some interested boys who were interested in trying to speak. It was very terrible when we were listening to their broke family stories that are real.”

“From our visit to rehabilitation centers we came to know the way of Salesian Brothers. They have built many centers to offer selfless service. In this process of growth of street children they have bright survey of the boys. We want to appreciate them for their success.”

“We have seen the street child in the society with many talents like electronics, driving, masons, in sports field, in education field, in arts. We could not feel that they are street children. It is nothing but God’s plan among the Fathers and Brothers to lead the children in their growth.”

“Another experience that we have in our stay in house is counseling with the boys, where we have spent much of our time. During our meeting with boys we came across many problems of boys and we felt all the problems are because of misunderstanding the things happened in their lives. Of course we could give them some suggestions we hope they could follow them. They said they are happy with our talk. We tried our level best to be with these boys. We tried our level best to be with these boys for these days. Their readiness to share their experiences made us to be mingled with them.”

“Though beginning I found it too hard to meet and share their lives with the boys, those who were roaming at the railway station, because when I called some of them they were running among the crowds, and the travelers looked at me. It was so shameful to me. But I caught strongly Jesus who sent here to do his will in the midst of these oppressed, and depressed ones. I couldn’t catch them by force and ask them why did you come here and roaming, because they are not sinners, they are innocents, they are looking after some supporters to their lives. Yes they need help.”

“From all these days what I learned and understood is “challenging and courageous life.” After speaking with many boys I came to know the reality about street children, that the street children are not the beggars or bad boys, but according to my understanding the street child is like one who lives courageous life by facing many challenges. The street child leaves his parents and everything and lives courageously, sleeps alone, eats alone, and lives alone, therefore I say that this is the real challenging life.
By all this my inner heart asks me that what are the challenges I am facing in my vocation and what can I do for these children through my vocation.”

“Do Everything for the Glory of God.”

“It was great opportunity for me to be here. I never experience like this ministry, but God has sent me to be with these children, those who abandoned, and those who are hated. When I see these children I feel very sad. In the railway stations, bus stand, parks, road sides etc., It’s very pity. Really when I am speaking with children they are beaten by their parents, rejected by their family member, relatives etc…. For this situation we have bring out our ideas and what we have to do in their future life.
When I am counseling with boys, they are saying a lot of their ideas and dreams. I felt that, when they came here they are thinking of their future life. Our founder’s charism is to go to midst of people. That we are following here. Before it was for me whenever I see the begging boys I go away from him. But now I make use of my experience to be with them. It makes me very happy.”

USA Provincial Visits India

Fr. Richard MacDonald, SCJ, the Provincial of the United States Province, visited the SCJ India District from September 17th to the 25th. Arriving in Kochi, Kerala, Fr. Mac visited the communities in Kumbalanghy, and Aluva. The SCJs and students were very interested in hearing about the Congregation in the United States; they had many questions during Fr. Mac’s conferences.

After a long 20 hour train trip, he was welcomed by the communities in Guntur, and Eluru. For such a short visit, Fr. Mac covered a lot of ground, as he saw the reality of the SCJ India District.

Fr. Mac is welcomed, Indian style, by the Dehon Vidya Sadhan community, Aluva, Kerala,

AND, by the Dehon Prema Nilayam community, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.

While in the Guntur area, Fr. Mac visited Ponnekalu Village. Below he is with some members of the Catholic community, in front of the church.

Some members of the village, who recently received SCJ grants to help them rebuild their homes, are eager to show off their almost finished buildings, as Fr. Mac stands VERY CLOSE to the edge.

At the nearby SCJ novitiate, in Nambur, the 9 SCJ novices give a hearty welcome.

Along side of Fr. Sebastian (Novice Master), Fr. Mac gives the novices information about the Congregation in the United States.

The SCJ theology community is in Eluru, a 2 1/2 hour ride by jeep from Guntur. With Fr. Kusmaryadi (Superior of Theology Community), Fr. Mac gives a conference to the theologians.

Onam Celebration

Oman is an annual harvest festival, celebrated mainly in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the foremost festival among the cultural repertoire of Malayalees, and falls during the month of Chingam (August- September as per the Gregorian calendar), the first month of the Malayalam calendar and lasts for ten days.

Though it is essentially a harvest festival of Malayalees. Mythologically it is linked to Malayalee-Hindu folktales. Onam is celebrated by people across all castes and faiths. Onam epitomizes the newfound vigor and enthusiasm of the season, and is celebrated with traditional fervor with visits to temples, family get-togethers, gifting each other clothes called Onakkodi, and lots of merry making.

Members of the Eluru community, in Andhra Pradesh, had its own Onam celebration. Everyone took part in the work of decorating and food preparation. The special meal was laid out on banana leaves.

Pookalam is an intricate and colorful arrangement of flowers laid on the floor. Tradition of decorating Pookalam is extremely popular in Kerala and is followed as a ritual in every household during ten-day-long Onam celebrations.

'Pookhalam' consists of two words, 'poov' meaning flower and 'kalam' means color sketches on the ground.

Sadhya means "big feast" in Malayalam a language spoken in Kerala , India.. Sadhya is traditionally a vegetarian meal served on a plantain or banana leaf; people eat sitting cross-legged on the floor.

The dishes are mainly cooked (plain boiled) rice, many curries, papadum, plain yogurt or buttermilk, banana or plantain chips, and two or more sweet dishes. The curries are made of different vegetables and are of different tastes. They can be made of yogurt, bitter gourd, mango, jaggery, etc. The idea of making many dishes in the Sadhya is that there will be at least two or three dishes liked by everybody.

Final Vow Celebration

On the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgen Mary, also India's Day of Independence, Br. Thomas Vinod Chittilappily professed his Final Vows.

Many SCJs and friends celebrated with Br. Thomas at the SCJ Novitiate, Sacred Heart Ashram, in Nambur, Andhra Pradesh.

After the homily, it is traditional to lay prostrate during the singing of Litany of Saints, before the Final Vow Profession.

Before the Profession the celebrant prays:

"Lord, hear the prayers of your people. Be your grace, prepare the heart of your servant for his religious consecration. May the fire of the Holy Spirit purify him from all sins and make him burn with your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen."

Br. Thomas professes the Vows of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience

After the blessing of the professed, the Cross, the sign of his profession, is presented to him.

"Receive this cross as a sign of your perpetual commitment to Christ in the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus."

All the SCJ religious welcome the newly perpetually professed religious as a sign of his lifelong membership in the Congregation.

Tsunami Boats

The SCJ Community in Kumbalanghy sponsored an event on August 9, 2006 where over 100 fishermen affected by the tsunami were given boats so that they can support their families.

Fishermen from the District of Kannamaly in Kerala gathered to hear speeches from public officials such as the panchayath presidents, MLA officials, and the former Minister of Fishing.

Frs. Martin, and Teja, Br. Leonard, and Fr. Wayne (visiting SCJ from the USA), and Fr. Carlos (SCJ from Venezuela) helped distribute the boats as each fisherman’s name was called out, passing out paddles to each of them.

Although it was pouring down rain, the fishermen gladly chose one of the 100 boats displayed in the field. Some of them put the boat in the water and began paddling as far as 15 kilometers away to their home.

This was the second boat distribution in a few months; totaling 200 boats.

The SCJ India District had also provided tsunami aid to villages in the last few months, giving out fishing nets, constructing houses, and putting up 32 water towers.

Feast of the Sacred Heart 2006

ELURU COMMUNITY

The Eluru SCJ community started the preparation for the Feast of the Sacred Heart with Adoration, devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, on Wednesday.

Thursday night, we began Holy Hour with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, at 9:00pm. We had our prayer in silence for sometime. After Br. Michael A. read a Gospel passage, he shared his insights and reflections on the passage. He spoke about the value of being humble and gentle in one’s life. He spoke of the humility of his mother, and her virtues, and that it is the duty of everyone to make humility a part of their life. He also strongly stressed the meekness does not mean weakness. After a while, A Hindi bhajan was sung in praise of God by Br. Sunderaj. Then we prayed Night Prayer.

The Blessed Sacrament was exposed throughout the night, so the Brothers were assigned in groups to pray and be present before the Lord during the night. Each group was requested to spend an hour before the Lord in singing, praying, and contemplation.

The Solemn Mass took place on Friday evening, at 6:00pm. Br. Beppe was the main celebrant. The parish priest from the Cathedral, Fr. Ratnaraj also joined us in this celebration, as well as the Sisters of Little Christ, our Telugu teach and family, and Tommy, the computer technician. Fr. Beppe gave his homily based on the love of Christ for us, and above all he said that our response to God was more important. He added that the Heart of Christ is beating for the love of his creation, namely for human beings. He also said that God makes Gethsemane become a paradise for all of us by His suffering, that we may learn to love Him in return. He reminded us of the purpose of celebrating Mass, that it is for all the people of the world, to bring them closer to God. The Eucharistic celebration was followed by dinner, together with the guests from outside.

On the following Sunday afternoon, the Eluru community went to Nambur the SCJ novitiate to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart. Arrive about 4:00pm, we took some time to talk with the novices, and had a nice time.

Adoration began at 6:00pm, with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Our Eluru community led the prayers. First, the Gospel passage was read, followed by a bhajan as a response to the Gospel reading. After praying for some time in silence, Br. Sanil presented some reflections on the meaning of celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart. He stressed the need to be more attive and aware of the Heart of Christ this if full of God’s abundant love for us, that we may follow the footsteps of our founder in showing compassion for the people around us. With the blessings of the Lord, Adoration ended.

There was a cultural program, conducted by the novices. Br. Khranti was the coordinator of the program, which included prayer dance, riddles, songs, short skits, and games. The SCJ Fathers were invited to cut the cake, and soft drinks were shared.

We had quite a few guests from outside: The Little Sisters of the Poor, the JMJ Sisters of Aloysius Gonzaka and their postulants, and also Frs. Ananda Jothi and Prakesh from the pastoral center were present. They took part in the Adoration, cultural program and dinner. Fr. Sebastian, the novice master, thanked everyone for sharing our presence with the Novices. After the dinner, the Brothers from Eluru left the novitiate at 9:00pm to travel back to Eluru.

Gorantla is a place where our minor seminary is situated, a bit far from the city of Guntur. In our minor seminary there are students who come here to know about their vocation with the Lord. Just two weeks before the Feast of the Sacred Heart, around 12 new candidates arrived at our seminary. They are all tine and simple students coming from different backgrounds. At the moment they speak only Telugu and we need to cooperate with them to help them feel at home.

There are also other candidates who have to finish their intermediate courses in the city of Guntur. In the midst of all these people and experiences we celebrated the feast.

The preparations for the feast, both spiritual and manual, were quite simple and matching our way of life. Spiritual preparation has been occurring along with the liturgical calendar, because after Easter Sunday, almost in every week we celebrated the consequent feasts and solemnities.

In one way it helped all Christians to prepare ourselves for the feast. The depth and quality is very genuine. I say genuine because we are only in the initial stage of prayer and deep experiences. But the preparation helped us to meditate and contemplate on the pierced Heart of Jesus who is opened to everyone.

In the manual preparations we tried to clean our house in the best way possible. The day before the feast, on Thursday, we cleaned all the rooms in and out very well. On Thursday afternoon we started decorating our house, mainly concentrating on the chapel, dining hall, recreation and entrance halls. All the candidates were quite happy to show their abilities apart from studies and other works. The Senior brothers took the initiative to guide and help the Juniors in doing the decoration.

In the morning of the Feast Day, we went to our neighbors, the Sisters’ College to celebrate and participate in the Eucharist. It was a different experience to celebrate our feast with other people, not limiting ourselves to our own community. In one way we see the open Heart extended to all people to share the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

In the evening, at 6 o’clock, there came a priest, who is the spiritual director of the students, Fr. Anthaiah, SDB. He gave us a short recollection to bring us close to the Heart of Jesus. At 6:30pm, we officially started our festive Adoration with our guests and students. The atmosphere was very good to pray and immerse ourselves in the Heart of Jesus.

During the Adoration, we prayed and adored the pierced Heart of Jesus in an intimate manner. At the end of Adoration we received the blessing to continue our tasks in a fruitful way. After Adoration we had a fellowship meal. The fellowship meal is a moment to share our love and happiness, and to express our hospitality to our guests: the seminarians and director of the diocesan minor seminary, the St. Anne Sisters, Mother Teresa Sisters, and the JMJ Sisters.

After the meal we performed some cultural programs to entertain our guests who came to bless us on our feast. Our entertainment and all the programs were concluded with the hymn of Mother Mary, and good prayers.

God is Love

“God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in Him may not perish but have eternal life.” (Jn 3:16)

It was a pleasant day, the day of the feast of our congregation. It began with the beautiful songs heard played over the PA system. The choir was singing solemnly early in the morning, praising the name of Jesus with Alleluia hymns.

Now started the great celebration which is the center of the Church, that is, the Celebration of the Eucharist. As the choir started singing loudly with one voice praising God with beautiful songs, the priests kissed the altar to offer the great sacrifice in the name of all who gathered. It was a special day for all of us, because the Mass was being celebrated by Fr. McQueen, scj who had just returned from a year in Rome.

During the day we were busy with arranging things for all of the guests that were invited to join us during Adoration. The guests started to come one after the other though it was raining heavily. There were Fathers, Sisters, Religious Brothers, and Lay People. All together there were around 60.

We began Adoration at 12:15pm with the introductory words given by Fr. Thomas, SCJ, and then we all read the Prayer of Reparation. The Gospel reading was read by Fr. McQueen. And, after the singing of a bhajan, the members of the Congregation together renewed their Vows.

After Adoration, everyone was invited to dinner, as a sign of sharing the love of Christ, with so many different people from different cultures, states, and countries. There were priests from Kerala, Goa, Ireland, and Indonesia. The Sisters came from different congregations, namely, the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, some of whom were from Korea and Nigeria, the Sisters of the Destitute, and the Holy Ghost Sisters.

During the meal, our 3rd year philosophy students served everyone, and there was a small entertainment given by our brothers during the meal. We finally ended our program around 3:00pm.

This day was truly a time when we were able to experience the love that is revealed through the Sacred Heart to all human beings. The whole celebration was filled with joy and happiness.

Dehon Prema Nilayam is located in the area of Gorantla, with amazing weather and a nice open area. Indian weather is very difficult to adapt to especially because our Fathers are coming from different places of the world. They are struggling to adapt themselves to this weather of Summer season. We have a lot of trees and plants around out house to reduce this heat. So, this is our minor seminary, where three batches are staying and living together.

There are Orientation boys. These boys are those who are training and preparing for a new life. Before telling about their situation after coming to the seminary, I would like to explain how they were chosen to enter this minor seminary.

The priests who are staying at the minor seminary go to different parish houses and they explain about our congregation, and invite boys to come for a vocation camp, usually held in the month of April. There are experienced priests, and brothers from theology, who choose which boys will enter the minor seminary program.

The new boys, or candidates, those who were chosen at the vocation camp, begin their program in the month of June. In the first month they will struggle to adapt themselves to this new life. They will feel bored and homesick, and some will try to leave the seminary.

They have a good, experienced English teacher. He plays an important role in our community with his knowledge and experience. His name is Lourdu Reddy, from the city of Guntur. In this house, the new candidates will discover their vocation in life. They will learn many things in the seminary. Their main subjects are English, liturgy, spirituality, including games…

All of our Fathers will conduct classes every day. They have a lot of expectations from the candidates, as they set their goals for the year. The Senior year candidates will work to make the new candidates happy, conducting games and cultural events, helping them not to feel homesick.

This year we have 12 new candidates from the last vocation camp. There are 8 boys in the second year, and 6 boys in the third year of seminary, making a total of 26 candidates. After the completion of the orientation year, the candidates will begin attending a local college, in Guntur.

We get good marks in our studies, and take part in sports. I can say that without our candidates, there is nobody in the college who can play so well. Fr. Guntoro did a good job teaching us basketball, volleyball, football and table tennis. We played on behalf of our college at the district and state level meets. We were winners in table tennis and football. In studies we got 1st rank for the last 3 years.

Not only enjoying ourselves, we also see to the salvation of street children, and poor people. Every Sunday we go to the 5 different sub-stations of the Gorantla parish, to prepare people for Baptism and Communion. We also teach them about liturgy. We have good bicycles to go to these places. The Orientation year boys go to the Sisters of Charity to help people and to share their lives. We have a good relationship with the Sisters from different congregations.

By God’s grace we have good formators from different countries: Fr. Valerio from Italy, Fr. Angel from Poland, Fr. Matai from Kerala, Br. Leonard from America, and Br. Joseph from Andhra Pradesh. They help us a lot in all of our activities.

Once a month we have a parents’ meeting so that we can share the negative and positive experiences with them. The Fathers will also speak with them about us, especially about the 2nd year candidates who went to work with the street children during the month of May, 2006, when every morning at 8:00am we went out to the railway station in Guntur to meet children, returning to the house at 8:00pm at night. Our aim was to get to know the street children and try to encourage them to come live at the shelter run by the Don Bosco Fathers.

During the month of May we also had the chance to go to Vijayawada to learn music, like the keyboard, guitar, tabla, etc..a

Every morning during the year we rise at 5:45am. Then we begin Morning Prayer at 6:15am and celebrate Mass. After breakfast at 7:30am, we have a short work period to clean house, and then begin classes and study at 9:00am. The 2nd and 3rd year candidates leave for college after an early lunch, and don’t return until the late afternoon, in time for sports. Adoration is at 7:00pm, followed by supper, and we have recreation until Night Prayers at 9:00pm. Then we have study time until lights out at 10:00pm.

I hope this gives you a good idea about our life here at Dehon Prema Nilayam.

SCJ India District Retreat

From April 25 to May 1, 2006, Fr. Kusmaryanto, from Indonesia, directed the SCJ India District Retreat.

The topic was on “Human Dignity.”

The members of the SCJ India District received a valuable overview of important bioethical issues that Christians are faced with in today’s world. We were given the Dehonian mandate to prepare for the challenges of the future.

Visit to Samala Deevi, Tsunami Victims

We started our journey from Eluru at 8.30am on January 26th, 2006. It took nearly two and half hours to reach Samala Deevi which is where one of the parishes of the Dioceses of Eluru is located. When we arrived, we met with Fr. Savio Stalin, the parish priest.

After a while we met with Fr. Prasad and Mr. Prakash, the engineer, who are working to complete the new houses for the tsunami victims. We had tea together, and then walked around the shrine, which is right on the beach, close to the sea. There were many fishermen on the beach working together to bring in a very large fishing net.

At 12.30 pm we went to the Ranga Puram Colony, where we are helping the people to build their new houses. The village is about 2 klms away from Samala Deevi. Here the people welcomed us with flowers and garlands. They were very thankful for our help

About the people:

The people in the Ranga Puram Colony belong to the fishermen community, and they are mostly Hindus. There are only 100 Christians in the parish. Ranga Puram Colony is a sub-station of Samala Deevi, where the main occupation is fishing. They do cultivate some paddy and some others do make salt from the sea water.

During the time of tsunami, the livelihood of the people was destroyed, and ten people were killed. There are different organizations that have been helping the people with food, cooking vessels, clothing, boats, and fishing nets. They are WORLD VISION and APSSS (Andhra Pradesh Social Service Society.) We, the SCJ community in Eluru are collaborating with APSSS in building houses in the fishing village.

We are helping five families build their houses. While we visited, we saw the work that they began on the houses and met with the families. Everyone was very happy to see us, and they felt gratitude towards for our help.

In the future we plan to continue to help the people of Ranga Puram Colony, by setting up a program to help children continue their education.

Eluru Community Ministry

85 street children / orphans were welcomed by the Eluru community. Although some of them are studying in secondary school, most of them are studying in primary school. They came from Ashakiranam, a children’s home that started in the year 2003. Srs. Mercy and Vimala are taking care of them. These sisters take 100 children every year and send them to school. Every month they put 100 rupees in the bank in the name of each child for their future livelihood.

Bros. Jojappa and Christy are doing ministry at Ashakiranm every Sunday, teaching them songs and games. We mainly try to make them happy. Most of the children do not have a father and mother; some of them were abandoned by their parents in the railway stations and streets. So we are trying our level best.

Novices Visit Eluru

On Saturday, January 21, 2006, we, the Novices, with our Novice Master, had a visit to our community in Eluru. It was an enjoyable and touching experience.

We arrived in Eluru at 9:30am and we were warmly welcomed by Fr. Beppe and all the theologians. After a moment of relaxation we had the opportunity to attend a talk given by Sr. Mary, who came from a neighboring convent.

The talk was very useful and touching because of its theme on “holiness” and of its simple, practical and concretized presentation. The talk emphasized the personal openness, and emptiness required to be filled by the Spirit, and the generosity and readiness needed to be moulded and used as a holy man of God.

(During the talk, everyone participated in an exercise where they were provided with a small amount of dough, along with a stone of the same size. We were asked to shape the objects into any possible forms. We went around shaping them and were back in a short time with our own results. Each one had his own interesting form of dough, while the stone was unshaped. The exercise was then compared to personal generosity and readiness to be moulded into any form when we are pliable like the dough, and not hard like the stone.)

The talk was followed by Holy Mass, celebrated by Fr. Beppe, where each of us was invited to offer to the Lord our own formed objects along with a personal prayer. At 1:00pm we had a delicious meal together with the community. After the meal we had a short visit to the Vijnananilayam Institute of Philosophy and Theology, at Vijnanpeta, where our brothers study their theology. At 4:00pm we had our tea and were given a good farewell by the community.

Besides the new sight, happy experiences, and the talk, what inspired me was the joyful and peaceful life of our brothers in a small house, having to make a lot of adjustments, and the sharing that went on by all the community members. I could learn from them a good example of religious life; ready and happy to adapt to any conditions, regardless of any adjustments in such simple and difficult accommodations. Their life example gives us much hope and strength to be ready for anything in our journey of vocation. They should be admired for living in such a poor condition in peace and happiness. I thank God, and Fr. Sebastian, for this wonderful visit to our community in Eluru, which will be an unforgettable experience.

Our Journey to Kammam (Badhrachalam)

It was with the invitation of the Bishop of Karnool, Bishop Mathew, that led us to think of a journey to Kammam where there live tribal people of Andhra Pradesh. We, the Eluru community, left for Kammam on Friday morning 7.30 am. We were joined by Br. Xavier from Nambur. It was a joyful journey to Kammam, it took almost 4 and half hours to reach Badrachalam, where Bishop Mathew presently lives.

The journey was through the forest area and we could see the beauty of Andhra Pradesh. After reaching there, we had some rest and we went to visit the Tribal Development Society, which is run by the Sacred Heart Brothers. Actually, a service of the Diocese, it is run by the Sacred Heart Brothers, with the help of some nuns. It is mainly meant to help the tribals who are the backward in society. The Tribal development Society goes to the villagers and makes them aware of their rights, empowering them to come into the main stream of the society. Their main aim give them their own dignity and respect.

Loyola Integral tribal Development Society (L I T D S)

In the afternoon we went to a Jesuit mission that works for the welfare of Tribals in another area. This program is known as LITDS: the Loyola Integral Tribal Development Society.

The Tribal Development Society is situated in Katukapalli, Bhadrachalam. It was a long cherished dream of the Jesuit Province of Andhra Pradesh to have this Tribal Mission, and they are running it successfully. with the collaboration of the Sisters of St. Ann of Luzern and Sisters of St. Ann of Phirangipuram. They also work in collaboration with SAGIT (Sabari Action Group for Integral Transformation), and the local government.

The tribes of this area are Koyas, Kondareddies, Gothikoyas and Naiks. They do hunting and little bit of cultivation known as shift cultivation. Every year they abandon the cultivated areas and choose another place. They also go to work as casual laborers for road laying and cutting of bamboo for paper. Their houses are made up of bamboo frames plastered with mud as walls and with thatched roofing. Their staple food is Jowar and Rice.

PROGRAMS

Education Program
The LITD is building a home for Tribal children; at present they are in a temporary shed. There are 215 Tribal children attending a Government upper primary school near by. So far, 2 boys have completed their education and are employed as Government School teachers. 3 girls are doing nursing; we visited one of these girl’s house. Many are in junior college and some are doing degree work.

They have got also summer school program, during summer children are motivated to teach the elders and youngsters of their village. Through this program many become literates every year.

They have a child labour camp, which has got more than 200 of children between 14- and 16, they are motivated to study and appear in public examination and through this a lot of young girls and boys are getting their education which was dropped early.

Health Program
A medical mobile unit is serving a number of villages in the forest. The sisters of St. Ann of Luzeren started this program, but handed it over to the Sisters of St. Ann of Phirangipuram. They visit almost all the villages regularly, and many lives of the Tribes have been saved during the past 10 years that this program has in operation. They have got also a dispensary that is open through out the day. Whenever some one is serious they rush to the place and given the necessary treatment. If it is too serious they take either to Govt. or Private Hospital at Bhadhrachalam. So far they have saved 857 tribes from serious cases. They have organized the program for the health of children; the health department of Andhra Pradesh Government is also collaborating with them. They have appointed health workers, whom have given training to serve in the villages.

Empowerment Program
This program organizes 1,351 Tribal women, from 58 villages, into self-help groups. This helps the Tribal people become free from the clutches of money lenders who collect exorbitant interests, and exploit the people. They also have created income-generating programs for 42 youth groups that were formed in the Tribal villages, and are motivating the child laborers to attend training camps. They also encourage them to join saving schemes and to start income-generating programs.

The Jesuits are still envisioning that this project will develop the lives of Tribals, to free them from their bondage. They are always ready to welcome the collaborators to achieve their vision. The Jesuits have already extend their hands to these oppressed.

But what about we Indian SCJs? We must be inspired to reach out our hands to these people who are living with much expectation in their lives. The Jesuits are experiencing the love of these oppressed people, a love that Jesus experienced from those whom he loved and embraced. Now, we the SCJs being in India for 10 years, how much love do we receive from these innocent and ignorant people?

It was a beautiful occasion and time for us, to think and to make some steps to become closer to the Tribal people, but, we are unknown to them. We the Indian SCJs must start to do something with new vision and a new approach to people like these, who are living in darkness. For sure we will be welcomed and loved by them if we can extend our hand in the name of Jesus.

We left the place around 6:00pm and reached at back home by 7:30pm.

Visit to the Mission of the Sacred Heart Brothers
On Sunday morning, we went to see a mission area called Venkatapuram, where the Sacred Heart Brothers run a school, attached with hostel. It was around 120 klms away from Badrachalam and is situated in the forest area. We reached there by12:00pm and we were welcomed by two of the Sacred Heart Brothers. They do their teaching and some social awareness talks that are making the people aware of the importance of education. Most of the people are Hindus, of Tribal Religions, Protestant Christians, but no Catholics. They follow traditional cultivation and are involved in forest works like hunting, gathering firewood etc…

The people are not very aware of the importance of education and other development activities. Government officials are not much bothered about these people and the people do not disturb the Government for their needs; they are satisfied with the little that they have in their hand.

The people belong to Tribal Caste, and in that they are Koyas and also some other casts, which are less in number. The majority are Koyas and the language of the people is known as Koyas; it is mixture of Telugu and Tamil.

The Brothers explained their works in that area, that they concentrate mainly on education.

They said that in the beginning they found it very difficult to do these works because the people were not supporting them, and the students were not coming to the schools and hostels at all. But slowly, they gained the confidence of the people and are continuing there work among all the most difficult. The students are given all kind of facilities because the Brothers are concerned about their future.

There is no other Catholic presence in that area. There are no other missionary priests or nuns. The Brothers are not able to participate in any of the Sacraments. They also find it very difficult to get the necessary things for their own survival. The area is isolated from the towns and shopping centers.

According to the Brothers, the officials and authority neglect these people and they are no in the least bothered about their development on any level. These areas are very isolated from the main stream of the State, and development works are very rarely done. The people are in need of the empowerment, which means making them aware of their rights and duties and bringing them to be citizens in the mainstream of the society. What the Brothers are doing is very great, but others need to be inspired by the Brothers and come forward to become involved renewal programs and developmental works for these forgotten people, who are living on the outskirts of the mainstream of the society. By 2:00pm we left from there and reached Badrachalam, and it was the time to leave for Eluru; so we prepared ourselves and expressed our thanks to Bishop Mathew.

Bishop Mathew was very happy to have us there for this experience, and as an expression of our gratitude we wanted to give him some money, but he rejected it with love and expressed that he is expecting us future missionaries to work in that area for the development of the people. It was really amazing to see the missionary zeal of the bishop; it was the time for the bishop to be in retirement, but instead of doing that he decided to live among the Tribals and work for the betterment of these people without any expectation of reward and recognition. He was really an inspiration for us; the time that we spend with him was really useful. Through his prayerful and missionary examples he challenged each one of us to have a missionary spirit in our hearts.

The Tribal people are really in need of the help of others because they are kept aside by the society. In many ways they are cheated and they always experience the bad part of life. This journey was an opportunity to experience the miserable life of the Tribals. They live a life of hopelessness; they are innocent people and ignorant of the present changes that are taking place in modern society, while the authorities and government officials take advantage of their innocence and ignorance. As the followers of Fr. Dehon, it gives a thought to us: What we can do for these underprivileged and unwanted in our society? As the missionaries of the future we have to give space for these people in our mission plans.

International AIDS Conference

Recently, Br. Xavier, who is studying for his Masters in Social Work, attended an International AIDS Conference in Chennai. This is his report:

“Transfer the Knowledge”

The Meeting in Chennai was the greatest experience I ever had in my life, so with my whole heart I thank all the people who gave me support for going to the meeting.

The Theme of the meeting was “Transfer the Knowledge.” The participants were from all over the world, so I had the great opportunity to meet them, ask questions and interact with them.

The Participants: The participants were from all over the world, so here I will introduce some of them who came to give the presentations in the different sessions I attended.

1. Dr. Premashwary: she is a doctor in medical collage in Chennai, and is the head of the department of AIDS. She came and presented a paper about her experience in the field of experimentation with AIDS patients and its control. She explained the way that it is all about making awareness to the people about AIDS and its effect. She said that many people are not aware of the danger that AIDS is to their life, and her department is working hard in that field to make people aware, so that she sends students to different parts of Tamil Nadu for awareness classes . Then she was speaking of the experiment she did with the patient who came to her for treatment. She said mainly that AIDS is spreading from mother to child, so if we are careful we can control it. There are some medicines for this on market, but at a very high cost, which a simple family is not able to pay for, but there are government agencies and some NGO’s that are helping to get medication to those who are in need of it. It is also not a sure thing that the medicine will prevent the sickness, but some give good results. But in some cases they fail, so all they can do is try. She then she spoke of the different medicine and their usage, costs, etc .

2. Dr. Siripon: Dr. Siripon, a doctor who lives in Thailand, also presented a paper in the meeting explaining the conditions and situations of AIDS patients in Thailand. She explained that 8,000 babies every year get AIDS from their mothers, so now they also are trying to control the spreading of AIDS through mother to child, but as we all know, more awareness is needed in this area and the government is doing a great thing in that field. Some NGO’s also work hard on this issue, and so far, they have good results. They have the problem of prostitution which causes a lot of AIDS, but now people know the danger of the sickness. She also described the methods they use for the treatment of patients, and some of the names of the medicines they use.

3. Dr. Jennifer Read: She is a doctor in the U S A. She spoke about the improvements that America has made in the field of AIDS prevention from mother to child; she said that there is no child in America born of AIDS now because the parents are told before conception or during conception how to be careful, and what are the ways and medicine to take, so now the government of America is also spending lot of money for the prevention of AIDS. Many NGO’s and other agencies and social workers are working in this field, so they have a positive result, but it is all trial and experiment. Some are successful and others fail. She also explained the methods and medicines they use for patients.

4. Dr. Kristi: Dr. Kristi is from Estonia , a country in the North East of Europe. She explained that in her country they have many people with AIDS, and now the government is aware of it, and is starting to do some thing about it, but they have not yet archived much in the field.

5. Dr. Selman Sahib: is from Bangladesh, he described the ways AIDS is spreading there. He said that injection of drugs, sex , mother to child transmission, and prostitution were the main causes, and that people are aware of the dangers, but still take risks and some even don’t bother, so AIDS is spreading. He also explained the methods and medicines they are using.

Still there were more presentations in this section, and all of them spoke of their country’s progress and methods they are using for the prevention of AIDS.

AIDS Patients:

Now I would like to tell you about some people who have AIDS, who spoke of their struggles and problems that they are facing in society, from family and even from Priests and Religious etc.

Mr. Paul: Paul is an AIDS patient for the last 7 years. He got AIDS while having sex with another woman, and it was a forced sex, and he was innocent, but the result was that he got AIDS and now he is out of the family, and his own people even in the Church are asking him to stay away since they came to know that he was a AIDS patient. His story is that when family and friends came to know that he was having the sickness they directly asked him to go away and the community also rejected him, so he approached the Parish Priest and Sisters, but all said they can’t help him, so he came to Chennai where the medical collage is giving help for AIDS patients. He is now a volunteer for the prevention of AIDS.

Miss Swapana: She is from Tamil Nadu and got AIDS from her relative who raped her when her parents were away. Now she is at a help shelter and is doing awareness programs for other people and families. She is a graduate and knows English, but when her family and others came to know that she has AIDS, they send her away, and asked her to never return.

Miss Renuka: from Kerala, got AIDS while receiving blood from a government hospital. She has been rejected by everyone. She is still suffering. She lost her job, any nobody is ready to give any help or give her a job. She is also a post-graduate. An agency came forward to help her, and now she receives medicines and other necessities.

Miss Muri: She is from Tamil Nadu, is a Higida, and she was also force to do sex with others. And when she got AIDS she was sent out by her community by her relatives. Miss Muri was working for a private company and they sent her away, so she started an agency for people with AIDS, people who are out of their homes, and are having problems. She is a full time worker, and got several chances go around India to witness the suffering of people with AIDS. Now she is the head of between 30 to 50 people who work for AIDS patients, giving direction and advice to people. Several doctors, social workers and medical people work in the agency with her. Even though she doesn’t know English, it did not cause a problem for her to convey her message. The participants of the conference gave her a big applause of appreciation. I had great chance to meet her and talk to her personally, and she was telling me that when all of us were applauding her success story, she was thinking of before, when she was suffering everything alone; going through it was so terrible that sometimes she thought to end her life. God alone gave her the strength to go on and be successful.

There are still many other life stories of suffering people, but to tell all of their stories is difficult, so now I will go to another part:

NGO’s in the field of AIDS: There are many NGO’s that work for people with AIDS, and are making people aware of the disease.

SHENKHA: is an agency which is working for street children in Chennai. An interesting thing is that when they found that most of the children who are under their care are HIV positive, they had to look for treatment for these children, and find medicine and provide special care. Now SHENKHA is an agency for AIDS patients, and children who are helpless and suffering.

Care and Share: This is also an agency that is working for street children, but the need of care for the AIDS children changed their policies. Now they work primarily for children with AIDS.

Now I want to tell to a life story about a child who happened to be living on the street, and what he had to face in his life until now. Santosh is the first born son in the family. The father was a drunkard and always caused family fights. One day Santosh ran away from home and got a train to Chennai. He knew nobody, and having no food, he started to beg. Someone gave him money, but the other children took it away from him, and he was hungry. During the night, two men came to him and made him do all kinds of sex activity until the morning, so that in the morning he was not able to get up for anything. But some children helped him and gave him some food, inviting him to be in their company. He did some work at the railway station, but the night program continued until he was in the streets for six months. He had some friends who would fight with him, so then he started other relationships, he went to other boys to do the same and then went to women for sex in the night. As he was reaching 14 years old, we all know that it cost him his life because now he is an AIDS patient and so sick, but so lovely a boy, but the doctors said that he will live in this condition maybe for one more year. He says that those who are on the street all do the same as he did, smoking, drinking, going with other men or women for sex, and many are have sexually transmitted diseases.

South Indian Positive Network: It is also an agency where they are trying to bring all the AIDS patients together for treatment, and sharing their work together, helping each other come out of their problems.

N A C P III e–consultation: This is an agency that works for AIDS patients. They give out information about AIDS, and offer guidelines. They do this through Email. They say that it is so much easier to work with email than by talking to people directly. But they still do help people who come to them, and give all the help they can. They have two kinds of knowledgeable people, one kind are experts, and the other ones are those who have experience with serving people.

Then there were presentations about the different medicines that are used for the experiments to prevent the sickness. They are Allopathic, Arvada , and Homeopathic. All of their different ways of treating patients were presented, and the positive as well as negative results from their treatments.

Now I would like to portray the discussion about the role and response of religion towards AIDS and people with AIDS.

Christians: Whatever we say, nobody can deny the works that Catholics, and others, in response to AIDS and people with AIDS, but on a whole we are doing nothing because only few are doing anything. Some run houses for AIDS people or hospitals etc., but the majority of Religious and Priests are not even speaking about AIDS and its problems. While the government agencies are supporting condoms, the Church is silent. Even when some Priests say something, others discourage it. Now it is the time for the Church to respond when a lot of people are suffering with AIDS. There was a time when leprosy was a common sickness, and people thought that it was because of sin. But realty was different, and with the help of the people of the Church, the sickness was wiped away. So now it is time for the Church to awaken to this sickness and respond together to prevent it. Then people gave some examples, describing the deeds of some Priests and Religious toward people with AIDS, where religious people said that normal men and women will not do what they did, many shouting badly at those people with AIDS, even when they were not present.

Hindu: Although there was work done by different people in the name of religion, they don’t have the works as we do, but some good minded people who have money do charitable works. Many from the Hindu religion do far more work than any religion, even though they have family and children to take care of. So there came the question, why do these people offer their life for service, but do their own things only?

Muslims: There was a presentation about Muslims, that they don’t have any specific work, as we do, but many people are generous and do a lot, but in secret. We, the Catholics, publicize what we do.

Reflections: When I look at the meeting as a whole, and what I learned from it, it gives me a lot of happiness and joy in my heart, because the meeting was international and so many people participated. They were not simple people, but all were from high class or middle class, so the personal conversations even when they were difficult, were so official. There were no arguments or problems with each other. Everyone respected each other’s freedom and dignity. This was so nice an experience for me. There were around 1,500 participants. Everything was well arranged, and from morning to night everyone was attentive to the conferences and interactions. Then, all were from the background of medicine and social work, so there was always a mutual understanding between one another. From all this, what I learned was how to be an official, and be simple. There was a lot of information about the medicine they use for treatment, and the sharing of life experiences of doctors, priests, sisters, lay people , social workers working with people with AIDS. And there were the sad stories of the AIDS patients with the negative, hurtful, reactions by their families and society, and even their religious leaders.

We all have to accept that people with AIDS are also human beings, and that they have the right to live on this earth as every other human being does.

Once again I say thanks to all those who supported me and gave me the chance to go to the conference and experience, especially to the District Council, Fr Martin, Br. Lenny, and Fr. Sebastin. Thanks a lot!, and God bless us all.

Let us do something for these suffering people.

The evening before the Assembly, the members of the India District had the opportunity to witness Fra. Thomas receiving the ministries of Lector & Acolyte.

After the Celebration of the Eucharist we gathered together to enjoy our annual District Christmas Gathering, with a meal, entertainment, and exchange of gifts.

The Assembly began in the morning of December 29th, 2005. 16 members of the SCJ India District gathered at Sacred Heart Ashram (India District Novitiate) for 3 days.

The major topic of discussion was District Formation. Reports were presented highlighting such things as the Common Principles of Formation , Administrative Issues that needed to be clarified, Program Expectations, the Goals of the District Formation Commission, Postulancy program, Regency, Religious Brothers in formation, Preparation for Final Vows, and the need for more personnel in India.

A report was given by Fr. Jose on the status of District finances.

Although Formation is the primary ministry of the SCJ India District, each community had the opportunity to describe the various outreach ministries they are involved in.

The major decisions that were made included:

*The Assembly decided to continue the discussion regarding the common principles of the formation personnel. The formation commission will send out a packet of materials to everyone

*The Assembly accepts the idea of a year long postulancy program, after Philosophy. There is groundwork that needs to be done: The Formation Commission, Novice Master, etc… will look into doing research to create some proposals. This process will begin immediately.

*The Assembly made numerous suggestions regarding the work and role of the District Formation Commission, it recommended the following regarding its membership: Each community will present a name to the District Council. The District Council will then decide on the membership of the Formation Commission, choosing from the group of presented names. A smaller number on the Commission is preferable, 1 coordinator, 3 members; but the council can be flexible in its decisions. The Formation Commission will be re-established with the new administration.

Christmas Celebration with the People

Today, our community at Dehon Prema Nilayam celebrated Christmas with the People of Gorantla parish. People belonging to four mission substations (Valanghanni Nagar, Mary Priya Nagar, Ponnekalu, & Jonnalagedda) joined us to share the joy of the birth of Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

The celebration began with the special program for children at 9:00am. They were given the opportunity to express their talents. The children responded well and displayed their unique talents with joy and happiness. Our SCJ student candidates shared some lighter moments with the children, who were 150 in number, and made them really feel at home, as they began the celebration of Holy Mass.

The Solemn Holy Mass began with the arrival of the parish priest, Fr. Joji, and our fathers, Frs Valerio, Guntoro, and Adrian, concelebrated. Fr. Joji, in his Christmas message emphasized the faith that we need to be sensitive to the needs and feelings of those around us. He also stressed the need for being in solidarity with those who are under-privileged and disadvantaged in the society that we live.

After the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist we had some cultural programs. Our SCJ students put up some very entertaining performances, and so did the children belonging to various substations of the parish. Then we gave them a simple meal, and also distributed small packages of sweets. A small group of physically and mentally challenged children also were present, and they had some delightful moments in the company of Fr. Valerio, and our SCJ students as well.

Overall it was a fantastic day with many enriching experiences. We all could feel the immense joy and happiness deep down after having shared it with the people around us. Including the children, over 400 people came to take part in this simple and meaningful celebration in our community.

Visit to Patna, Bihar

Archbishop John and Fr. Martin (SCJ India District Superior)

From October 27th to November 1st, Fr Martin & Br. Leonard visited Patna, in the state of Bihar, North India (North of Kolcatta). Patna the imperial city, once called Pataliputra, is the capital of Bihar, and is among the world's oldest capital cities with unbroken history of many centuries as imperial metropolis. It is a very fertile arched stretch of land along the bank of the Ganga. A bustling city of 1,200,000 people, the city is approximately 15 km long and 5 km to 7 km wide.

Many languages are spoken in Patna. Hindi is the official language of the state of Bihar. Thanks to the British influence since early days, English is also spoken extensively. The native dialect is Magahi. Other dialects from other regions of Bihar spoken widely in Patna are Bhojpuri, and Maithili. Other languages spoken in Patna include Bengali, and Oriya.

When the state of Bihar was divided between Jharkhand (Ranchi) in the North and Bihar (Patna) in the South, the strong economic resources were centered in Ranchi, leaving Bihar (Patna) with huge poverty and few resources.

Sr. Amrita, provincial of the Patna Province of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, contacted Fr. Martin months ago because she was interested in a retreat on Sacred Heart spirituality. Fr. Martin sent her information about our congregation, including a copy of the SCJ Rule of Life. Sister was impressed with what she read and requested that we give them a retreat; which is now scheduled to take place in April 2006. Sr. Amrita invited Fr. Martin to visit Patna to get an idea of who they are, and to make some detailed plans for the retreat.

Arriving on Thursday, October 27th, we were introduced to the community. On Friday, Archbishop Benedict John Osta, SJ, was our tour guide for the day, taking us 4 hours away by car to the center of Buddhism, Bodh Gaya. During the journey, the Archbishop shared much about himself and the needs of the Archdiocese. At Bodh Gaya, we visited a convent of Sisters who are dedicated to the challenge of Religious Dialogue (they have a community in Varanasi, connected to the Hindu & one in Bihar, connected to the Buddhist.) They are working closely with the Jesuits nearby and will soon construct a parish church to serve the Christian community in that area. The parish church will be situated at the very entrance to Bodh Gaya, giving visible witness to the presence of the Christian community. The Bodh Gaya is one of the poorest areas of India. Archbishop Benedict pointed out that certain villages are Naxalite territories. He then gave us a personal guided tour of its shrines. The Archbishop said that he is open to our sending SCJ students to his archdiocese for immersion experiences / regency, but reminded us that knowing Hindi is a necessary requirement; suggesting the possibility of our sending a group in a couple years.

Over the next few days, we were taken around to some places where the Sisters are involved in ministry. Some of the Sisters are involved in visiting poor villages, and provide mobile health clinic services there. One sister is actively working with prostitutes that visit trucker rest stations. We were given a tour of two schools that they run in the Patna area, one in an isolated poor village on the outskirts of the city and the other, a city school, where most of the students are Hindu girls and boys.

The Sisters are dedicated to a simple, communal life style – their motto is “All for Christ.” Their founder, Bishop Louis van Hoeck. SJ, was a Jesuit Bishop of Patna, who wanted to begin a congregation of Indian Sisters that would work to better the lives of women in Patna, who live lives of poverty and oppression. Four years after founding the congregation, June 11, 1926, the Bishop was transferred to Jhansi, and the administration of the congregation was given over to another Congregation, the Sisters of the Holy Cross. During this time the Sacred Heart Sisters became disconnected from their original purpose; they now have been autonomous (with the Archbishop) for a number of years and are very interested in developing their own Spirituality, thus the reason for the requested retreat. Presently, the Sisters of the Sacred Heart have two provinces, one in Patna, Bihar, and one in Jamshedpur, Jharkand. All together they have more than 450 members.

A number of times Sr. Amrita asked us when we will begin a community in Patna; our response being that we are only there to educate ourselves about the reality of North India.

On Sunday afternoon, Fr. Martin & Br. Leonard were invited to give a conference to the Sisters who live at the Generalate and Provincialate, including their post-novitiate Juniorate students. As we presented some elements of SCJ Spirituality and spoke of ministry goals in India it was evident that the Sisters were very interested in understanding how they can develop their own Spirituality and find better focus in their ministries. They especially wanted to know how they can inspire and promote interest for social ministries among their young Sisters.

During our stay in Patna we also visited the Jesuit regional school of theology, whose curriculum is focused on ministry to Dalits, and then with the Jesuit Provincial, and novitiate. The Archdiocese of Patna was originally founded by the Jesuits of the Chicago Province, USA, and continue to maintain a close relationship with them. There are still of number of American Jesuits in Patna, in active retirement.

The evening before the Diwali celebration, Fr. Martin & Br. Leonard accompanied Sr. Amrita to the Little Diwali function held at the pastoral center of the archdiocese, run by the Jesuits. It was an opportunity for meeting various Priests, Sisters, and Brothers working in the Patna Archdiocese. In Patna there are several Jesuit institutions, including a major Environmental Center for Research and Study, and a Center for Prayer and Spiritual Development.

The Archdiocese is very much involved in the social issues of Bihar, in Inter-Religious Dialogue, and is active in service and justice ministry to Dalits, Tribals, and Women.

Mission Sunday

DEHON BHAVAN, Kumbalanghy, Kerala

A wonderful day, Sunday, October 23, which brought the people together to share their love for the missionaries. The preparation for this day was done within a week by our community here in Kumbalanghy, going around and collecting the people’s contribution to this mission day. They contributed the materials necessary for preparing food, and for the auction. Thus we were able to collect a good amount of money, many coconuts, rice, etc. The day before (Saturday), we started the preparation for this day. Many of our neighbors came and did the preparation for the food for the next day.

On Mission Sunday, as unusual, many people came and joined with us in the Holy Eucharist, in which Father Martin spoke about the specialty of the day, and exhorted the people to make their further contribution to this day. And he stressed, that “we can express our love to the missionaries only through our prayers and these small acts, and it brings joy to all of us as one community”.

After the Mass, people were invited to come and take breakfast with us, by paying 20 rupees (18 rupees for the breakfast, and 2 rupees as their contribution to this mission). Some others bought the food from us by paying the same amount. Meanwhile all our brothers were ready, with many attractive games, such as: throwing the rings on various things placed on the table(by paying 1 rupee you can have a ring and throw it over any one of the things that you want to take; if you are lucky, it will fall on the specific thing which you desire to get for you), Lucky lottery (you have to pay one rupee to take a lottery in which is written the name of the gift (if only you are lucky), and lighting of 15 candles with one match stick, etc.

From all these ways, we were able to collect Rs. 4,319. (From the Breakfast: Rs. 2,381, Games: Rs. 584, Collection for the people: Rs.1,242, and from the auction: Rs. 612.) After all our all expenditures, we were able to collect Rs. 2,472 as an amount to send for the mission.

It was really a day of oneness and joy. Thank the Lord for the gift of the missionaries in this world, because they are able to show the hands of God to the one who wants to experience God…

New Postulants

This is a report was written by Showe Reddy, SCJ about the ceremony of entrance to the postulancy that took place at Dehon Vidya Sadhan, in Aluva, on the 17th of October:

The ceremony started at 6 pm. Father Thomas Stanley opened the ceremony by welcoming all ten of the 3rd year philosophy students who were going to be accepted into postulancy program. After a short introduction, Fr. Martin delivered a homily. In his homily Fr. Martin stressed two main points: 1) that “you can not give what you don’t have”; this being true at all times and with everybody, and that we can change our life by changing what’s inside if we are willing to go that extra mile. 2) that Inner Silence is very much needed in our spiritual life. Without this we can't pray or reflect. This Inner Silence helps a person grow in the spiritual life.

Besides these two points, Fr. Martin also insisted on the importance of Mother Mary’s presence in our daily life. As we are in the Month of the Rosary, Mother Mary is in a special way present in our life.

Then Fr. Martin conveyed the message of our Superior General, who encouraged the new postulants to be courageous in seeking their own vocation.

Fr. Martin reminded them to be Prophets of Love and Servants of Reconciliation and to continue their journey of faith with the congregation. He told them not to imitate any one, but to be genuine in their own call.

After the homily, there was the presenting of the symbols: the Bible and the Juba (a special shirt.) Then the ceremony was followed by Eucharistic Adoration. In his prayer, Fr. Martin gave thanks for all the things that God has been doing for our congregation and he said that still we are in the beginning, even after 11 years of our presence in India.

At the end of Adoration the new postulants had a group picture taken with their formator, Fr. Thomas, and Fr. Martin, the District Superior.

Immersion Experience 2005

8 SCJ philosophy students from Dehon Vidya Bhavan, Kerala, spent nine days (October 6-14) at Don Bosco Navajeevan, a shelter for street children. Run by the “Salesians of Don Bosco,” it provides shelter and support for the abandoned children living on the streets of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.

Street children live in dirt and filth. Some of them are severely mal-nourished and are the victims of diseases like tuberculosis, typhoid, malaria, jaundice, kidney disorders. Many are victims of drug abuse and liquor addition. Sexually transmitted diseases are rampant. Skin diseases and broken limbs are not uncommon.

Don Bosco Navajeevan seeks and reaches out to neglected children through its programs of:
*street presence
*counseling
*shelter
*providing basic needs,
*literacy
*recreation
*medical aid.

During this time the SCJ students participated in the programs that meet the needs of the 150+ children living at the shelter.

“This immersion experience with the street children helped us to get freedom from all of our wrong thinking about them. In our one week experience we felt them as our friends and companions, who share with us their food, shelter, games, and life stories. We did not see them as someone low down to us but as someone who needs us, who wants to talk with us.”

Every day they walked the railway stations, bus stations, and parks, talking with the children and inviting them to the center, where they could find food, a shower, clothing, or medical attention.

“This was an experience that we never had in our life. Here we experienced the reality of living among the street boys and speaking with them. This experience helps us to have some kind of expectation about our work in the future.”

Fr. Angel Begins Sabbatical

Fr. Claudio visits India!

On August 29, 2005, Fr. Claudio Dalla Zunna, SCJ, General Councilor and Missionary Secretary, began his visit to the SCJ India District. After spending some time in Kerala to spend time with the communities in Aluva and Kumbalanghy, Fr. Claudio proceeded to Andhra Pradesh to visit with the communities in Guntur and Eluru. He departed India on September 10th.

This is a description of founder’s day celebration at Dehon Vidya Sadan on the 14th of August.

The celebration of the day started by a welcome to everybody by Fr. Thomas Stanley, rector of the house. He started with, “we gather here to celebrate the birth and death of our beloved Fr. Dehon. We come not for competition but for sharing.” At 10 o clock we all took part in group photo, which is the tradition for this day. Then Tiffin was followed.

At `11 o clock we assembled at the study hall for the quiz competition. This year the material was from the ‘Mustard seed’ article and a ‘History of Indian District.’

We were in time for Eucharistic Adoration, where Fr. Martin shared some of his reflections. After Adoration there was a blessing and presentation of crosses to the new candidates by Frs. Martin and William. I saw a great joy in the eyes of the candidates. There was also blessing of new chapel in the first floor. Then it was time for most important celebration. We all were in dining hall to share delicious dinner.

At 2 o’clock we were yet again in the study hall, this time for our cultural gathering. Each house’s presentation was about 20 minutes. Then at 3:30pm it was time for games. We had table tennis, caroms, volley ball, and badminton. All brothers played with great enthusiasm to win. As we know the best ones win. Here too, almost all the prizes went to Dehon Vidya Sadhan. Nevertheless the joy of all the brothers was the same. That was the spirit we all were filled with. There was one hour for the next program, so all three houses participated together in a foot ball match. At 6 o’clock in the evening we all gathered for the last time for distribution of prizes and Tiffin.

Around 6:45pm all brothers bid farewell to each other.

This was great occasion to get together and share joyful and fraternal love with one another.

Report on Founder’s Day, 2005

The communities of Eluru theologate and notivitiate celebrated Founder’s Day together with the Dehon Prema Nilayam community here in Gorantla on Sunday, August 14th. The novices were not present here as they had a special program at the novitiate. The Dehon Prema Nilayam (DPN) community made all the necessary arrangements for the special occasion. The celebration began with the arrival of the Eluru community at 9:00am. DPN students gave them all a warm and hearty welcome. After having a short time for refreshments we began our outdoor activities at the sports field. In order to highlight the “community” dimension on this day of our founding father, we arranged a cricket match and volleyball match between Eluru and DPN communities; the former won both matches. However the latter’s efforts can’t be underestimated, for they put up a good show without merely surrendering to the seniors.

In the evening we had a solemn con-celebration of the Holy Eucharist, presided over by Fr. Kus. Fr. Sebastian delivered a meaningful homily. He was trying to explain in brief the life of our founder and invited all of us to walk in his footsteps in order to make some of his dreams a reality. After the homily all the SCJs renewed their vows of Poverty, Obedience, and Chastity. At 7:00pm we had a short informal get-together. At the very outset of this gathering Br. Darmaraj gave a beautiful message in the person of our late founder, and thus reminded each of us of the significance of this day. On this auspicious occasion the young DPN students put on many programs, and entertained everyone. The brothers from Eluru also gave some programs and made their presence felt. Then we all shared in the fellowship meal, which concretely reminded us of our “togetherness” and a sense of belonging. After the delicious Dehonian meal we bid farewell to the Eluru theology community and that brought our Founder’s Day celebration to an end.

Records Management and Archives Administration Project

From July 7 to August 2, 2005, Fr. Wayne Jenkins, scj (archivist for the U.S.A. Province), presented a course in Records Management and Archives Administration to members of the SCJ India District.

The course included:
a) Introduction,

d) Principles from Pontifical Documents and Canon Law,
e) Policies for Records Management and Archival Administration at the SCJ General Curia in Rome, Italy,
f) Policies for Records Management and Archival Administration at the US Province Archives in Hales Corners, WI, U.S.A.,
g) Development of the District of India Plan,
h) Evaluation

Taking part in the course were Fr. Teja (District Councilor), Fr. Jose (District Treasurer), Br. Leonard (District Secretary), and Mr. Sobin (Accountant). Bros. Showe Reddy, Sajeevan, and Abraham (newly professed regents), and philosophy students: Immanuel, Ravindra, Balraj, and Thomas.

Report on the 2 Day Regents’ Meeting

In June, 2005, three of the newly First Professed who are assigned to assist in our formation communities as regents, participated in an orientation meeting.

The following report was written and submitted by Br. Michael:

We started the meeting with a short prayer. Then Fr. Teja officially welcomed us, as newly professed members to this special task of regency, on behalf of the district council. At the very outset of the meeting, Fr. Martin asked us about our reaction when we first heard that we are appointed as regents. The three of us, Br. Abraham, Br. Showe Reddy & Br. Michael, expressed how we felt on hearing about our appointment as regents. After this sharing Fr. Teja explained briefly about this regency as the year to learn, to develop and to deepen and gave us a short questionnaire and asked us to reflect and to share. They are as follows:

a. Write out the knowledge, skill, and attitude that are needed to perform this task of regency, where my primary duties would be to educate, to inform and to motivate?
b. What is my expectation from this program?
c. What fears/worries if any, about this regency program?

After a short reflection we shared our views and both of the fathers were pleased with our sharing. Then Fr. Martin defined regency as ‘give and take’. Here we receive more than what we give. He also gave some useful instructions for us in order that we may do this task more professionally.

 Be a prayerful person yourself
 Give priority to the least among the students
 Be friendly with the students but don’t be the friend of students
 Have a positive tongue i.e. don’t badmouth about the community or the members you live with.
 Maintain the secrecy of the community.
 Have a good spiritual guide.

In the evening session Fr. Teja explained to us some of the vital points from the ‘Ratio Formationis’ for the regency program. They are as follows:
It’s a period of time during initial formation which is set aside for full time ministry. It’s an integral part of the formation program. It is intended to reinforce and to deepen the formation given prior to regency. It’s to provide pastoral formation for ministry.

Purpose:
 To continue formation in a setting that is less structured than the seminary, thereby challenging the brother to act from his convictions and values.
 It is more focused on service and ministry rather than study, thereby challenging the brother to focus on the needs of the Church and of others.
 It is a reflective time, thereby enabling the brother first to understand God’s saving mission in cultures and religions different than his own.

 Enable the brother to understand the ways in which God wants him
 To understand people and cultures different from his own.
 It enables the brother to understand how he can be formed by these people.
 To understand and accept what they can teach us.
 To understand and to communicate what they are ready to receive from us.

 To introduce to the brother the forms of ministry that reflect our district’s ministerial orientation in order to discern and deepen his commitment to the congregation.

Duration: The length of the regency is one year allowing the time for vacation and retreat.

Supervision: The rector of the major seminary will be the coordinator of the regents. He approves program for each regent.

Regent Director:

 Meets with the regents every two weeks to reflect on the items under purpose.
 Do an evaluation at the end of each semester with the regent.
 Speak with the person in charge of the regent’s ministry.

Personal time: The regent is to have one day free in a week, free from responsibility which can be used according to his need.

Before the end of the regent year, the regent has to present a report about his reflections on the year, at least in 1000 words.

Through this meeting we have come to know the significance and various implications of the regency year. It has also enabled us to know what it means to be a regent. Finally, both the fathers wished us best of luck for this special year. And with a prayer we brought this fruitful meeting to an end.

It was a very joyous occasion for all the SCJs, family members, and friends who were present for this celebration.

Jhansi Diocese Village Experience

From March 21st until April 21st, one SCJ priest and 7 SCJ students of theology traveled to the Diocese of Jhansi, in North India. Bishop Frederick D’Sousa welcomed the group to experience first hand the life and work of his diocese.

They spent the first 2 weeks in a remote village called Pakdilpur, where they lived with the people, worked with them, and visited families, listening to their stories and getting to know their life challenges.

During their last few weeks, they left Pakdilpur and traveled by road across the length of the diocese visiting various mission stations.

During the 1st week of May, 2005, at Sacred Heart Ashram, Nambur, Andhra Pradesh, the SCJ Novice Masters of the Philippines, Indonesia, and India met together for the first time. The participants were Fr. Sebastian Pitz (India), Fr. Aloisio Back (Philippines), Fr. Blasius Sumaryo (Indonesia), Fr. Martin van Ooij, (India District Superior), with Fr. Beppe Pierantoni (India) and Fr. Heinz Lau (Germany).

After each novitiate program was presented, the participants discussed issues, questions, difficulties and challenges that they share in the SCJ Asia Region.

Some questions included:
*How does the Novitiate Program in each country reflect the spirit, practice, and spiritual/social tradition of the Congregation?
*In what way might we adjust, change, develop our Novitiate Programs in order to make them more Dehonian?
*How does the issue of “We the Congregation” and the question of the “refoundation” of the Congregation fit into our Novitiate efforts?

The time together provided for an enriching experience for everyone. There was a good, fraternal atmosphere, and everyone agreed there was a need to share resources. It was very good to hear what one another is doing, learning from one another.

Gandhi Day

Our neighboring village is one of the villages in Kerala that was quite affected by the tsunami. More than 2,156 families are still suffering. Five people died. The leaders of the 3 nearby villages (Kanamaly, Cheriakadavu and Kandakadavu) recently came together to discuss what could be done for them. They decided to distribute food, and invited the SCJ community at Dehon Bhavan to participate in this action.

It became a cooperation of the Hindu, Muslim and Catholic population. Members of the Congress party took the leadership. They decided to distribute the food on the 57th memorial day of the assassination of Gandhi . It was very meaningful decision.

So on January 30th, the leaders showed up at the village and expressed their concern for the affected people of the tsunami. They invited the people to work together to rebuild their village in cooperation with the local government, adding that if there are any irregularities they should immediately inform the coordinators. They emphasized the example Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, and spoke of the help coming from the central party leader, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi.

The distribution of the food than took place. Our SCJ community accepted the responsibility for 562 out of the 2,156 families. We divided up 2,250 kgs of rice in buckets of 4 kgs to distribute to the families. We also plan to further assist the families in this area by building one or more water tanks. Plans are now taking place in dialogue with the local authorities.

Next Thursday, we will visit an area in Tamil Nadu which was greatly affected by the tsunami, in the Kanyakumari district, where more than 1,200 people died. There was even a mass burial of more than 200 people. The psychological and emotional pain is still very much with the survivors.

After our visit I will give you further information.

Tsunami Children's Day

"Can we do something as a community for the victims of the tsunami", was the request of our young seminarians at Dehon Bhavan, in Kerala.

After visiting the parish priest in Chellanam South, where many children found themselves pulled into the water on December 26, 2004, the decision was made to plan a “children’s day” in that area.

Our students prepared food for 500 people, while others prepared a cultural program. On January 29th, the whole community went to Chellanam South to be with the children who welcomed us very enthusiastically. The culture program and the time playing games later created a very warm atmosphere. Everyone had a smile on their face.

The distribution of the food was well organized and peaceful and everybody came away satisfied.

It was a wonderful day.

The SCJ community (Dehon Prema Nilayam) in Gorantla, a small town just outside the city of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, is part of a parish that includes 6 villages: Valenghany Nagar, Gorantla I & II, Jonnalageda, Lam, and Ponnekalu.

With the help of an SCJ regent who acts as his Telugu translator, and with the support of the parish priest, Br. Leonard visits the villagers at least 3 nights a week. The people, who are very poor, live in very basic cement brick houses, or mud huts, and are for the most part agricultural workers. The goal is to develop a small core group of leaders in each village, leaders who are interested in becoming involved in their community to work for justice.

Although it does takes a long time to develop trust and working relationships, leadership teams have already begun to work together on projects, projects such as rebuilding their falling down churches, finding public funds to rebuild their homes, getting muddy roads paved, and making drinking water available to everyone.

The members of the Dehon Prema Nilayam SCJ community, and students, contribute in many ways to the local village communities, from celebrating Mass in isolated places, performing funeral services, conducting bible groups, and offering catechatical classes for children. Last December, the local SCJ community successfully enjoyed the second year of it's new tradition of inviting village residents to celebrate Christmas with them; they welcomed over 300 children and parents!

The first day of the year marked the inauguration of the foundation stone for the theology house here in India. The previous week the members of the Indian District were in the district assembly in Nambur, so all came here on the exact time of the inauguration. The Bishop of Eluru was the main celebrant. He came and blessed the stone. In his introductory sermon he advised that there would be a tabernacle and that it would be for the salvation of souls, and the betterment of the society around the house and for our benefit. He also said that if the Lord does not work, our work would be in vain. And his sermon was simply inspiring for all who were gathered here. Then Fr. August (the provincial of the German province) unfolded the stone and made all happy by his presence.

There was a small sermon by Fr. Martin, scj. He thanked all who helped bring our presence here in India. And he thanked all the members of India for their unconditional service.

There was a small tea break and the sharing of New Year wishes between all the brothers and fathers. Afterwards we visited our college campus here in Janempet. All were happy to see the other congregations which will be our future neighbors.

We had a very special lunch which was prepared under the guidance of Brother Thomas, scj, at the Bishop’s house. Fr. Martin submitted to the Bishop a simple “envelope” for which he was very thankful.

Many were present for this program. I would like to mention mainly, Fr. Madya, scj (Asia representative of General Council), Fr. Augusut, scj (Provincial of the German Province), and Fr. Edwin, scj (Mission Procurator of the German Province), all who were present for the district assembly, all the novices, and the theology house fathers and brothers. Thank you all for your wonderful contribution and hope to see more of you during this year.

Future SCJ House of Studies

On January 1st, a bus load of 34 SCJs left Sacred Heart Novitiate in Nambur to join the SCJ theology community in Eluru, A.P. to lay the foundation stone for our new house of studies. The Bishop of the diocese of Eluru, and Fr. August, the provincial of the SCJ German Province, participated in the ceremony.

On the third day, the assembly discussed issues about an SCJ house of studies for theology students, and the future of the SCJ regency program.

Tsunami

Nearly 200 people were killed in South Kerala. Tsunami waves rushing from the Arabian Sea invaded the land creating havoc and destruction for the coastal fishing hamlets. Our SCJ Community house in Kumbalanghi (Dehon Bhavan) is situated around 15 klms away from one of the affected areas. Over 10,000 people have been evacuated from the coastal villages of Alappuzha, Kollam, Calicut, and Trivandrum. Hundreds of huts were washed away and the on-rushing waters battered fishing canoes resting on the beaches. Some of these houses belonged to the families of our candidates who attend our minor and major seminaries. They have been relocated to refugee camps. The school nearby our house in Kumbalanghi is filled with refugees. They are in need of care, concern and support. The health department warned the people about the possible outbreak of disease and cautioned people against venturing out along the seashore.

Presently the members of the SCJ India District are in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh participating in the annual District Assembly. During this time they will make decisions about how the SCJ India District will respond to this great tragedy.

The Bridge Has Been Built

On September 23, 2004, the Indonesian Province celebrated the 80 years of their presence in Indonesia. The celebration was marked by ordinations, and was a joyful gathering together of all the members of the province. We are grateful to the Dutch missionaries who came to the island of Sumatra, planting the seeds of the Kingdom of God in a land where most of the population is Moslem.

It was 80 years ago, when the missionaries from the Dutch Province were sent to open a new mission in this land. Their first task was not to make the SCJs present, but to begin building the Indonesian Church. They came under the authority of the Dutch Government, since Indonesia was its colony. When they landed they found themselves in the middle of Sumatra’s jungles, and then went through the Musi River to the city of Palembang. Their dedication, commitment, and sacrifices have borne so much fruit.

Their mission has been accomplished. The Church in Sumatra has been established. Two dioceses under the service and ministry of the SCJ Congregation continues to grow and develop. Many parishes, educational institutions, social service centers, and retreat centers have been established. The number of young SCJs has regularly been increasing. The quality of and promotion of advanced education for the sake of better ministry has become an important focus. Even the sending of Indonesian SCJs as missionaries to other countries has become a priority.

On the other hand, the number of diocesan priests has been growing and they are ready to take over the responsibilities of the local church. That is why that in the celebration of the 80th year of its presence, the Indonesian Province is trying to re-found itself and is reviewing what form of ministries it is called to commit itself to in the present day. The task of the Dutch missionaries is accomplished; now the Indonesian young generation has take over, and will continue SCJ ministry according to the needs of the modern Church.

Because of the presence of the Indian and Philippine SCJ Districts, the Indonesian Province has changed its policies, its ways of thinking, and ways of looking at itself as a Province. Since the General Administration asked Indonesian SCJs to become involved in and participate in these new missions, the Indonesian Province has taken up the challenge to act accordingly. Indonesian SCJs are no longer alone in Asia; the bridge to connect the Indonesian Province with SCJ provinces in Europe or other countries has been built. The question now is how to make this bridge useful and meaningful today.

The biggest challenge for Indonesian SCJs is how they might work together with both of these young districts and to collaborate with them in developing the spirituality and charism of the Congregation more in the context of Asia. The Indonesian Province is challenged to prepare its members to be ready to respond to the needs of these districts in many aspects. The strong demand to learn the English language as the means of communication is required. The presence of the Indian district has opened up the heart and the mind of many Indonesian SCJs and has challenged them to make a
greater response to the needs of the Congregation. It has also made them more aware that the spirit of “We, the Congregation” demands their response. The development of the Indian District challenges us to more seriously consider how we can work together as a Congregation.

We hope that the co-working we have already started in the Asia Zone will continue, and that it will become more effective in building up a close working relationship from now on. This cooperation must not be just on the level of a meeting of the superiors, or other partial and occasional activities, but it must go deeper, in a sharing of our experiences and in enriching each other.

The bridge has been built; the way to go outwards has been opened. The challenge now is how we will walk together on this bridge, and how we make this journey together pleasant and meaningful to those who are entrusted with SCJ ministry. We now have an open gateway for going to many more distant countries in Asia. May the ‘baby Indian District’ walk far away to reach out to the needs of the poorest of the poor and the most needy of people by bringing to them the spirituality and charism of the Heart of the Beloved Jesus Christ.

On Monday, November 15, McQueen, SCJ (from Goa) and Mathai, SCJ (from Kerala) were ordained deacons. Although there was a statewide strike of all public transportation, and discouragement of any travel on that day, the celebration was still attended by many SCJs, family and friends. The ordinations took place in Kumbalanghy, Kerala, at St. George's Church, with Bishop John Thattumkal officiating.

House Reconsturction and Poor Children's Education

It’s a fact that we, SCJs in India, are very limited in terms of social ministry, mainly due to the foreign origin of most of us. Notwithstanding, we have been able to give a considerable contribution to social activities in this country, which presents great discrepancies in the wealth distribution and many needs in the social development. Our presence right now is one of being intermediaries in financial help to institutions and individuals. Everyday we receive requests for contribution in medical expenses, education fees, food, and for the running of charity institutions.

Besides the everyday small donations for food and medical expenses, we have created two funds with the money that comes from benefactors, mainly from the diocese of Rotterdam in Holland and from the USA: The Fund for House Reconstruction and the Fund for Education of Poor Children. In addition to these two funds, there is the fund for the different charity and social projects of Fr. Adrian van der Wilk, SCJ. Our purpose is to direct the benefactors’ money to projects that will improve the life standard of at least our most poor neighbors, independently of their caste or religion.

From the many requests, we are able to select the people we consider more in need. Right now, we have helped to reconstruct the houses of half dozen neighboring families, and we made possible the attendance of school and university to several children and youth. We are careful not to give the full amount needed by the people. If this would happen, we would contribute only to a mentality of dependence and begging. We want the interested people to contribute also with something from their own. However, to each we give at least more than 50% of the amount estimated. We have been giving also considerable contributions to institutions, namely related with orphaned, physically or mentally handicapped children.

Our hope is that gradually, as we have our own Indian SCJ priests and brothers, we can start projects of our own. With this in mind, we invite our students to participate in the decisions related to charity donations and to the help given through the funds.
